What is Reiki?

We are surrounded by energy and our bodies are also composed of it. You may have heard of this energy being referred to as 'qi, chi, prana, universal-energy or ki'. The term Reiki comes from the Japanese words 'rei' meaning universal or spiritual and 'ki', meaning energy, breath or life force. Together you could roughly translate it as 'universal life force energy'. It is pronounced as 'ray-kee'.

The healing method which we call Reiki in the west was discovered by Dr Mikao Usui in Japan at the turn of the 20th century. He spent his life working with it, studying it and healing others. Dr Usui passed his ability onto his students and it quickly spread across the globe. Interestingly, most practitioners (including myself) can trace their lineage of teachers back to him, just like a family tree!

During a treatment the energy which is all around us is passed through the hands of the practitioner directly to the recipient, replenishing their  energy system which may have become weakened or depleted by illness or injury. Anyone can benefit from this regardless of beliefs, religion, age or gender. Even animals and plants can have treatments. Reiki is completely safe, non-invasive and complements all other types of treatments and medications.
